The thing that you forget, and that everyone else seems to forget, is that the choice for the Lakers was not Artest or Ariza. It was Artest and Odom, or Ariza and no Odom.

Because Ariza would not have signed with the Lakers for what he ended up signing for with the Rockets, he and his agent were firm in their demand for 9-10 million from Mr Buss, Nine million would have precluded signing Odom and Ariza and probably Brown as well. The Lakers made the only logical move.
