If the Knicks were able to sign one max guy, would that remove one of those minimum contract placeholders? I don't know how the math would work, but would that enable them to sign a second max guy?

Joe Treutlein           144

That's my understanding.

WTF? Come on           145

Gallinari is NO WAY "the best player of those named." In what dimension is Gallinari better than Beasley?? (Gallinari probably isn't even the 5th best player on the Knicks now.)

Guest            146

Which scenario do you think is best for NY: Two of the big five players, or one of the big five players, Rudy Gay, and Anthony Morrow?

Cameron           147

Gallo is a lot better than beasley. Beasley is lazy and the heat even were trying to trade him.

Kai           148

Is there a chance/scenario any team in the league can bring home the big three, Wade, LBJ, Bosh?!

Joe Treutlein           149

Kai: In short, no. They'd make 16.6mil each in first year, for a total of 49.8mil combined. Even if you had zero players on your roster, you'd have nine cap holds at 500k before adding those three players, which would be a total of 4.5mil. That'd mean you'd need a cap of about 54.3mil to sign your third max player, and there's little chance the cap gets that high (or that anyone completely clears their roster). Guest: I'd prefer Bosh/Wade over one of those guys + Gay/Morrow. I think there's a good chance GS just re-ups Morrow for one year, making him again available in 2011, when the Knicks could snatch him up for the MLE, should the CBA still allow it. I think you go for the stars before the role players, especially in a city like NY where you can buy your supporting cast after your core is in place. The problem NY's had the past 11 years is they just haven't had a core worth a damn.

Thank you Joe! So another question, will you do that type of article about the Nets! I think they could be in a perfect position in the summer when they would trade Dooling and Humphries for someone who has an expiring contract. Then get two max guys like LBJ/Bosh. So they would have ton of talent: 2 max guys, Lopez, Lee, CDR, Williams & Yi and perhaps Boone. 3 draft picks. So they also got 9mil on Daven Harris contract. Wait if you will be #1. If they got lucky, draft Wall, make him your starting PG and trade Devin for some value. An backup for LBJ or another big man, backup C. What do you think?!

Joe Treutlein           151

Based off a quick rundown of the numbers, I don't think NJ can realistically get themselves in position to get two max offers without some aggressive trading today and tomorrow, or by giving up Harris for significantly less salary in return come summer time (a strong possibility if they draft Wall). I'll write an article on that by early evening today. Also, only 500,000 of Dooling's contract next season is guaranteed, so trading him isn't a big deal.

Ok great, looking forward. Ok not informed about who's contract is guaranteed and not. So should they try to dump anybody else? Humphries? I don't like Yi, so what about him?

Joe Treutlein           154

The Nets should get rid of Yi and Humphries by Thursday if possible. They should have been shopping them all season, as neither is likely to ever be a rotation player for a championship team. Locking up 7 million in those two players as opposed to taking a chance on the best free agent class in history just doesn't make much sense. I can't speak as to what they have or haven't tried to get done, but there's no reason to keep either. I'd have been constantly shopping Battie, Dooling, and anyone else who could help a team this year as well. Even if you swap expirings and get back a future second round pick, that's still better than doing nothing.

Kai           155

Yeah, I'm with you on that one! Can't believe not hearing any rumors about the nets. Perhaps it's because everybody talking about knicks, bulls, celtics, washington and especially the Amare-Cavs situation. But they should do everything they can. They got young talent & draft picks to make a deal work out for them!!!!!

gregori           156

if the knicks honor lees cap hold of 10.5mil and then sign james for the max and use the approx 5mil left for another player and then sign lee to an over the cap contract using his bird right, can then then use lee in a sign & trade for bosh.

Joe Treutlein           157

Assuming someone in the league wanted to sign Lee for more than 10.5 million annually? Yeah, the Knicks could do that.

Don Taylor           158

@WTF? Come on. Gallinari's win score:6.84, his adjusted win score:5.45 Beasley's win score:5.85, his adjusted win score:4.14. In addition Gallinari's sick range opens the floor for stars like Wade while Beasley remains a spacing problem.

WTF? Come on           160

Gallinari is so overrated by Knicks fans desperate for a star. Beasley is flat out better than Gallinari.

Joe Treutlein           162

The deal that actually happened is the same as reported above, except swap Sergio in for Cook/Dorsey. Inconsequential. Everything else still accurate.

Rob           163

When exactly do the Knicks have to make the decision to renounce David Lee? Could they keep his rights and (the possibility of signing him using the Bird exception) after July 1st, then renounce him at some later point if they have a better use for the cap hold, i.e. signing a second max player? In other words, let's say that on July 15 LBJ and Bosh both decide they want to play together for the Knicks. Could we at that point renounce D-Lee to make it happen?

Joe Treutlein           164

The Knicks can renounce Lee whenever they want. For example, Josh Childress still hasn't been renounced by the Atlanta Hawks. He became a free agent two summers ago. Further, the Knicks can hold on to Lee while negotiating with Bosh/Lebron, and then renounce Lee if Bosh/Lebron both agree, or sign him instead if they're forced to go to Plan B.

Thanks. Please disregard the unintentional double post.

Joe Treutlein           167

The double post thing is an error in our site that happens when you refresh the page. It's our fault, not yours. :)

Matt           171

Isn't the 2010-2011 min salary for rookies 473,604 and min salary for players with 10+ years 1,352,181? Aren't you using the 2011-2012 numbers? .. According to http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q14

Joe Treutlein           172

Yeah I made a slight error. Doesn't change much, though.

Matt           174

Just was curious. Thanks for answering.
